How to make your money go further this Christmas

  • 14 December 2022

Christmas is often considered the most expensive time of the year, especially if you have a large family like many people in the UK. Many of us have had to adapt this year to slightly more savvier spending, and Christmas will be no different. Take a look at some of our tips to reduce your spending this Christmas.

1. Set a budget

Write down and categorise everything you will need to spend on over Christmas. Food, alcohol, decorations, treats, presents and socialising, and determine what you can afford. If you’re trying to be super savvy, write down what you are spending and track your finances. It might sound boring, but it will really help in preventing you from overspending or even getting into debt over Christmas, especially if you are saving for a home!

2. To stay even more budget-savvy, opt for a Secret Santa

If you have a large extended family, buying Christmas presents can start to get really expensive. A Secret Santa is a great way to make sure everyone gets a present, no one misses out and nobody is expected to spend a fortune!

3. Shop local

Rather than spending lots of money on delivery and shipping from faraway places, support your local economy and save on costs by shopping local! Your local shops will appreciate the support and your pocket and conscience will thank you for it.

4. Keep an eye out for discounts

There are always discounts and incentives at this time of year, so keep your eyes peeled at all times!

5. Re use your Christmas decorations

Make use of all of the decorations you have at home – there’s often no need to buy brand new decorations and reusing what you already have will save you a lot of money. If you’re feeling creative, why not try making your own baubles or Christmas decorations, especially if you have kids!

Remember that Christmas should be about spending time with your family and friends and enjoying the day. There’s no need to spend hundreds of pounds for the sake of one day – everyone is experiencing the strain of the current cost of living crisis right now. The best gift you can give is spending time with your loved ones!

Merry Christmas from everyone at Thirteen Homes.
