Things you might not have thought about trying and things to avoid at all costs...
Redecorating your home or starting from scratch with a blank canvas requires quite a bit of thought, time and energy. You might have a million ideas about what could go where, or you might be completely blank. Either way, there are a few rules you can follow to create a beautiful home that will blow guests away!
1. Avoid making rooms too ‘themed’
You might love nautical themed décor right now, but it’s not ideal when you eventually tire of it and your bathroom is covered in rope, anchors and seashells! If you live by the beach, why not create subtle nods to your surroundings using appropriate colour palettes or artwork?
It’s not just about themes, though. Basing your rooms or entire home around one strict colour or palette can really limit your capabilities when it comes to refreshing or changing things up. Try keeping the walls quite neutral, which can make it easier to switch your accessories when the time is right. Although dark walls are all the rage right now, make sure you’re getting the roller out for the right reasons!
2. Start with your essential, largest pieces first
You’re always going to need a sofa to sit on and a table to sit at to eat your meals, so begin with these. Who knows, you might find the sofa of your dreams in an amazing colour or pattern that you love, and you can use that as the basis to create the rest of the room’s aesthetic.

3. Try not to overdo it with the clutter!
Having an eclectic space with lots of keepsakes and sentimental items is lovely and makes for an interesting home, but it’s important to recognise that there is a fine line between having a few talking points and just plain mess! It can make your space feel super small and cramped if you have too many bits and bobs lying around.
4. Mix up old and new
A combination of old and new furniture can add real interest to your space and could even become a talking point. If every piece of furniture comes in a flat pack, you could risk making a room feel too manufactured and uniform. Even if you live in a new home, consider how you can add interest with an antique chair or other accent item.
5.Variety is the spice of your space!
Don’t buy every single item in your rooms in the same colour, pattern, fabric and design. The best way to keep your space interesting is to mix things up! Choose different fabrics and colours, for example differently shaped vases, lamps or cushions.
6. Have fun with it
Decorating your home doesn’t have to be that serious! See it as an opportunity to experiment, get creative and go with the things you love – not what you think is trendy or what others might like (just please don’t paint your whole house black!).
